TRAINING

Every Tuesday is considered "drill night" (or "drill day" if the firefighter's full time job requires them to work the afternoon shift). This means that each week for 3 hours, a Tinley Park Firefighter attends a training session. This is needed to keep firefighters trained on the continually changing firefighting and rescue techniques. Tinley Park has a state-of-the-art training facility for this purpose. The "Training Center" is located at 7800 W. 183rd Street. The Center was put into service in 1995, and consists of a Training Tower, Confined Space Rescue Simulator, Fire Pump Certification and Testing Pit, Driving Course and Water Rescue Pit. There is also a classroom available next door to the Center for classroom work, and a designated area for training of auto extrication.

The Training Tower is a 4-story building with an adjacent "burn room". The burn room has a roof simulator above it. This allows a fire to be started in the burn room, and a firefighter can cut holes in an adjustable pitch roof right above the fire, giving actual heat and smoke conditions of a real structure fire. The opposite side of the tower has four floors, with rooms on each floor. The all concrete and brick construction allows fires to be started in rooms that can be setup like homes, with bedrooms, kitchens, etc., and fires can be started on various floors, so firefighters can perform rescue and firefighting with actual heat and smoke conditions that would be found in actual structure fires, whether it would be a basement fire or a fire in a multi-story building. The outside of the building has windows and patio doors so rescues from upper floors can be simulated. Each room in the tower is monitored with measuring equipment so that room temperatures can be measured during drills, reducing the danger to firefighters in the tower.

The Confined Space Rescue Simulator is a structure designed to simulate a sewer or tank rescue. A firefighter can practice rescue in a confined area, and be ready for those types of emergencies.

The Fire Pump and Certification Test Pit allows for the pumps on the fire engines to be tested annually to assure they will be in working condition during an emergency. The test pit has a 20,000 gallon below ground water tank that allows pumps to be tested at maximum capacity (1000-1500 gallons per minute) without wasting water. The water is recirculated throught he tank. These tests are done to all our Fire Engines yearly

The Driving Course is used to teach Engineers (the firefighters responsible for driving the fire equipment) the correct driving skills needed to reach the scene safely.

The Water Rescue Pit provides a safe and controlled area to practice various types of water rescues.

The Training Tower was partially built with public donations. It has allowed Tinley Park to be one of the best-trained Fire Departments in the region. Other area fire departments regularly use our Tower for training and pump test certifications as well.
