A Fire Engine or a Fire Truck? -- Is there a difference?

YES!

A fire engine is designed to carry water and hose. The Firefighters riding the engine focus on firefighting. Our fire engines carry 500 gallons of water and over 1,000 feet of hose. The Department currently has six (6) fire engines:

A fire truck will have some type of ladder or basket on top. They are much longer than a fire engine. The Firefighters riding the truck focus on entry, rescue and ventilation during a fire. The Department has three (3) trucks:

Specialized Equipment:
The department has specialized equipment including a brush truck and a rescue squad. The brush truck is a modified pick up truck that is used to drive into wild land areas, off road, to extinguish grass fires, etc.
The squad is used to bring additional tools and manpower to the emergency scene.
As you review the photos of our equipment you will notice the numbering system that we use on our vehicles. Tinley Park has been issued all the numbers from 200 to 299 by MABAS 24. All our vehicles are identified by a name, engine, truck, squad and a number. Engine 201 for example housed at station one. The last digit represents the station. As another example truck 203 would be housed at station three. Enjoy looking at our vehicles.
