Would you like to become a Tinley Park Firefighter? (Actually we are a paid-on-call / paid-in-place department.) The application process is really simple. There are a few requirements.

1)      You must be at least 21 years of age at the time of the test.

2)      You must reside in Tinley Park or within one mile of its borders.

3)      You must be in good physical shape.

4)      You must be willing to give up your free time to participate in training, call responses and our shift program.

5)      You must be willing to accept 100 new friends.

So where do you start? Start by picking up an application at the John T. Dunn Public Safety Building , at 17355 South 68th Court, Tinley Park, Illinois. Want to call for information? Try 708-444-5200, tell them you want to apply and they will give you directions or download the application from this web site.

Applications are reviewed on an 'as needed' basis You will be called for an orientation that your family is invited to attend. If you are still interested the department will give you a written and agility test. These are done on a Saturday. You will also go through an oral interview. All these activities are scored and the applicants are rated accordingly. Based on this rating an eligibility list is formed. Prior to being made a member you will be sent for a physical and drug screening. Applicants that are already certified State of Illinois Firefighter II or better are called as soon as possible. These individuals will serve a probationary period to assure that they are trained in the departments operations.

Applicants that are not certified will be sent to the MABAS 24 Fire Academy for training. There, upon completing the State test, they will achieve the status of Firefighter II. Academy classes are offered in the fall and winter and you will be assigned to one of those based on your ranking on the eligibility list. The Academy classes last seven months and are held every Monday and Wednesday from 7:00 - 10:00 PM. Practical training is held at the training tower approximately every other Saturday.
